Collaborate on a family wedding quilt made of cake!

At a Glance

Donna’s fiance had a brilliant spin on the family quilt idea: what about a family quilt that you can not only display at the wedding, but also eat? That’s right, I said “eat.” Introducing the family cake quilt.

We believe homemade cake is the best! Cakes baked from family heirloom recipes and made with love are so delicious to share with friends and family. So, what better way to share great wedding cake than through a friends and family collaborative cake quilt? (This was my fiance’s idea/inspiration, isn’t he fantastic?)

Here’s how we did it:

We have a post on our wedding website for guests to sign up and discuss with each other. I plan on having an option on the printed invitations/RSVP cards so not-so tech savvy folks can sign up as well.

cake quilt board

We ordered golden cake boards that I’m going to ship with a small thank you/instruction card to the participants. I think the cake boards are so important, and add a physical, tangible board to associate the agreement to participate. It’s also a visual reminder, and the gold makes it feel extra special! And they should all be the same size to keep the quilt looking a little more unified than a random cake potluck.

And then I made a video to show how easy, simple, fun participating will be…

And it was a total hit:

I love this idea!!! You could also ask everyone for their cake recipe and put them together in a book as a favour for the guests!

adorable. But that’s so much cake to eat! Are you doing a cake-swap? If you brought one you can take one? because i’m not sure how you could eat all that cake at one wedding.

How fun! I would have loved to have done something like that, but cake recipes to everyone I know include a box. I’m the only person I know that bakes from scratch (including my own wedding cake in April).

I love this idea! I never seen anything like it before. It’s fun, gets everyone involved, and is definitely not the same old, same old.

Nice idea! And even nicer that you anticipate guests who are willing and eager to participate. If I did this, I would anticipate eye rolls from all.

Fabulousest idea for a cake EVER! If my wedding didn’t have to be in another country with no access to ovens, I would be stealing it. As it is, I hope I can drop this idea in the ear of any one I know who might possibly get wed and invite me so that I might take part in such a cake quilt. I tip my hat, stitch my quilt and eat my cake to you and your fiance!

so much love to you! This would be amazing, if the bigger side of my family were good cooks 😛 The smaller side are AMAZING cooks, but just two or three small cakes wouldn’t quite make a quilt. Maybe a dish towel 🙂 Can’t wait to see more pictures!
