Bridethulhu is the new Bridezilla

We’re totally sick of the term Bridezilla, but there’s no denying that as you grind your way through wedding planning, it can be helpful to have a term for that rage-filled, insane creature that bubbles up in your mind at times. We’re totally sick of the term Bridezilla, but there’s no denying that as you grind your way through wedding planning, it can be helpful to have a term for that rage-filled, insane creature that bubbles up in your mind at times.

And now, courtesy of an offbeat reader and her fiance, we finally have our new term:

My biggest fear is becoming a Bridezilla of epic proportions. My wonderful fiance swears that I could never be one no matter how hard I try — and that Bridethulhu would be a much more fitting epithet. It made me laugh and things like that are one of the reasons I am marrying the beast.

There you have it! Old and busted: Bridezilla. The new hotness: BRIDETHULHU!

For those unfamiliar with H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu character, here’s a little back-story courtesy of Wikipedia:

H. P. Lovecraft’s initial short story, “The Call of Cthulhu”, was published in Weird Tales in 1928. Described as resembling “…an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature…. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque scaly body with rudimentary wings,” the imprisoned Cthulhu is apparently the source of constant anxiety for mankind at a subconscious level.

“The source of constant anxiety at a subconscious level” pretty much exactly sums up my wedding planning experience. BRIDETHULHU: BEGONE!

We’re having little chrocheted bride and groom-thulhus! (groom-thulhu has been decorating my fiance’s office for years in a variety of tiny hats).

His sister is being totally awful about her wedding, so I said “I promise I won’t be a bridezilla like your sister… I’ll be bridethulhu!”

    This shirt is MINE!

My friend was calling me Bridemothra before I got married because I was the complete opposite of a Bridezilla. I hated talking about the plans or how things were going and tried to play it down at every opportunity. “IT’S NOT A WEDDING” being the most said words out of my mouth! (It was a BBQ with a side of marriage)

How unbelievably fitting for me. I’m not the kind to rage and yell at people about the wedding plans. I refuse to be a Bridezilla. Even with 4 days to go and everything being DIY! *continues pulling out hair* But you can bet you tushy that I am driving myself insane with anxiety. I’m not sleeping and barely eating. I’m just ready for it to get here so I can stop stressing and have fun. 🙂
