When you think “wedding puzzles,” you might picture something basic like a custom guestbook or a table assignment activity. But Jon and Julie? They turned their ENTIRE wedding into a narrative-driven, cooperative puzzle experience that had guests racing around the venue with UV flashlights, decoding clues hidden in flowers, and unlocking hand-crafted clay favors.

Oh yeah, and there was a whole multi-day hangout week in the San Juan Islands leading up to it. So while this wedding looks pretty traditional on the surface (white dress, clean-cut suits, and a gorgeous coastal venue), there were some deeply offbeat undercurrents worth spotlighting. Let’s dig in:

1. The Puzzle Game: Turning Guests into Adventurers
Designed by puzzle experience vendor Whimsically You, based on in-depth background on the couple and their story, values, and passions, this wasn't your average game of Clue. Guests randomly received shaped puzzle pieces with someone's name on them. They had to find the piece's proper owner, then (once they had their own piece) find the rest of the folks their piece went with to complete the puzzle and reveal which island (and therefore table) they were assigned. The finished puzzle revealed a design inspired by ocean life and celestial elements on one side and a unique photo of the couple on the other.

From there, the game unfolded with whimsical steps that required real collaboration: codes were hidden in the centerpieces, invisible ink had to be revealed with tiny UV camping lanterns, and messages were tucked into unexpected places around the venue. Guests were seen waving flashlights and whispering excitedly as they solved clues together—a full immersion experience. The adventure culminated in a final lockbox challenge, and the moment one cousin swooped in to steal the victory at the last second? Iconic.

The prize? A treasure trove of handmade clay ornaments, which many guests had painted themselves earlier in the week, now unlocked and distributed as custom favors.

2. Multi-Day Vibes = Anti-Compression Wedding Energy
Jon and Julie didn’t just want a wedding… they wanted an experience. They invited guests to spend the whole week with them in the San Juans, with activities like kayaking, hiking, ceramics, and cozy nightly hangouts. This extended format allowed people to settle in, relax, and really connect. As Julie put it, the week felt like one big hug.

It also gave everyone time to contribute to the celebration in meaningful ways. Guests helped paint ornaments that became part of the final wedding puzzle prize. Jon's mom hand-selected and arranged every single flower. And the vibe was more camp retreat than Pinterest-perfect.

3. DIY + Communal Art Projects
This couple really leaned into the power of community-created keepsakes. The paint-by-numbers guestbook was a collaborative masterpiece that now lives in their home as a memory-laden artwork. Instead of writing their names in a book, guests painted parts of the couple’s portrait, a way more intimate form of participation.

Plus, the colorful ornaments made by Alchemy Art Center were custom stamped with Jon and Julie's mark and lovingly painted by guests earlier in the week. It wasn’t just a wedding… it was a week of making things together!

4. Serious Heart + Silly Vibes Sure, the ceremony looked traditional at first glance—classic gown, elegant florals, clean setup.

…But one look at the couple’s portraits and it’s clear these two don’t take themselves too seriously. They jumped, they made silly faces, and Julie’s Toms shoes had rainbow stripes peeking out from under her dress.

5. Offbeat Ripple Effects: A Floral Awakening One of the most touching side stories from this wedding is that Jon’s mom discovered her floral superpowers while creating the arrangements. Not only did she select and arrange every stem for the wedding, but she caught a serious floral arranging bug. Since then, she's been designing arrangements that are auctioned off for charity and diving deep into floral theory books. Her passion became one of the most unexpected and beautiful outcomes of the whole event.

Other Little Details We Loved:
- The table names were all island-themed (like Matia), tying everything back to the San Juan setting.
- A custom tri-fold pamphlet created as part of the puzzle experience included fun facts about the couple, like the groom's original Tinder profile, and tidbits about the San Juans. The game also incorporated personal details like their first date at an octopus-themed bar, with a game where they had to give an octopus eight local microbrews.
- Their adorable engagement story from the Pacific Science Center. Jon wore his heart rate monitor during the surprise proposal, with a spike at the exact moment he popped the question.
- The reception timeline included dedicated moments for storytelling, guest contributions, and a final send-off that rolled right into an afterparty with bonfire and s'mores.
