For a long time my husband and I have been talking about wanting to have Cthulhu cake toppers for the wedding (he is really into H.P. Lovecraft and used to run a lot of Lovecraftian role-playing games in university).

So I did my best to make Cthulhu cake toppers, and I thought they turned out okay! Here’s how I made them…

Cthulhu clay

I used emerald, black, and white polymer clay (Fimo soft) for the modelling.

I had nail art tools, cocktail sticks, cutting blades, and lots of patience.

I also realized that if you don’t have rubbing alcohol to wipe the work before baking, you can substitute it with vodka!

I look forward to explaining what they are to my future husband’s conservative relatives.

As a person who hasn’t really had a lot of exposure to H.P. Lovecraft, I would like to know how you pronounce “Cthulhu?” It would be nice to be less ignorant 🙂

My fiance and all of our nerdy friends who love Lovecraft (I’m not apparently cool enough haha) pronounce it “Ca-thew-lew”

It’s an issue of much debate. Check the comments here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkGqJqvWOUs

Favorite one: “According to the actual text, Cthulhu’s name cannot be pronounced by a human voice.”

In my head I say “sih-thoo-loo,” but that’s wrong.

I have friends far nerdier than me that say something like “kith-ulu.” It sort of sounds like you’re sneezing if you’re doing it right.

OMG. SO very cute. My HP Lovecraft-obsessed fiance would adore these!

This is the first time in my life I’ve been able to use the adjective “Lovecraftian” when referring to wedding decor. This is a big day for me.
