Our DJ/MC suggested we break up our first dance from the parents dances since it’s a lot of emotion to handle all at once (before dinner, no less!)
I used to work at a catering hall, and 99% of the weddings I worked had the parent dances after the bride and groom cut the cake. This way, the guests were being entertained while we were cutting and serving the rest of the cake.
We did the parent dances followed by the first dance at the end of the dinner hour. Then the end of our dance bled into the beginning of the general dance music, and everyone just got up and danced with us! Worked great.
We’re doing basically the same thing as Sarah. The parent dance songs are a little more upbeat to start bringing the vibe of the room up a little before we get everyone dancing to some higher energy beats. Give people a little time to digest before they start bouncing around.
