About Channing Johnson Photography

I don’t rearrange your world. I document it. By anticipating emotion rather than directing it, I capture your relationships in their “imperfect perfection.”

My approach is rooted in a photojournalism degree and experience shooting for TIME Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. Whether I’m on assignment for a national publication or a single family, my goal remains the same: to honor the truth of the moment.

I’m not here to create beauty. I’m here to see the beauty that’s already there. Documentary wedding photography isn’t a style to me. It’s a matter of substance.

All work is personal work.

Services Offered

I am a documentary wedding and editorial photographer based in Melrose, Massachusetts, specializing in unposed, authentic storytelling across the greater Boston area and New England. My background is rooted in pure photojournalism, meaning my goal is always to capture honest emotion and real relationships rather than directing or forcing poses.

Here is a detailed look at the services I provide:

1. Documentary Wedding Coverage

My primary service is documenting your wedding day just as it naturally unfolds. Outside of our scheduled portrait time, I operate as a silent observer. I do not stage moments or ask you to replay events for the camera.

  • Base Packages: My wedding day coverage starts at $5,000 for 6 hours.
  • Flexible Timelines: If your day requires more time, you can add extra hours at a rate of $600 per hour.
  • Dedicated Focus: I adhere to a strict one event per day policy so that you have my absolute and undivided attention.
  • Multiple Locations: I am happy to travel between your getting-ready spaces, ceremony site, and reception venue as part of your standard coverage.
  • Second Photographer: Because my low-profile approach works best when I blend into the background solo, fewer than 20 of my 400+ couples have ever utilized a second shooter. However, if your timeline or logistics genuinely demand it, I can bring on a trusted second photographer.

2. Portraits & Engagement Sessions

While my focus is candid, I recognize the immense value of beautifully composed portraits:

  • Wedding Portraits: I dedicate an organized, stress-free window of time during your wedding day to capture clean, classic family and couple portraits.
  • Engagement Shoots: You can book a separate session with me prior to the wedding. I approach these with the same relaxed philosophy to ensure your images feel like you, not a staged photoshoot.

3. Post-Processing & Image Delivery

I manage all my own post-production to ensure my high standard of journalism ethics is maintained from the shoot to the final edit. I review and edit every single image individually without using automated AI shortcuts.

  • Authentic Retouching: I do not alter bodies, change facial features, or digitally remove real-world background elements.
  • Classic Correction: Your final images receive custom color, exposure, and contrast adjustments to ensure they stand as accurate, beautiful historical documents of your day.
  • Digital Delivery: I deliver all high-resolution, finished files through a private online proofing gallery. From there, you can easily download your images, share them with loved ones, or order high-quality prints.

Service Area

While I am proudly based in Massachusetts, my bags are always packed. I serve all of the Northeast including Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, and Connecticut, but my services are fully available for destination weddings and editorial travel assignments worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t rearrange your world. I document it. By anticipating emotion rather than directing it, I capture your relationships in their “imperfect perfection.”

I’m not here to create beauty. I’m here to see the beauty that’s already there. Documentary wedding photography isn’t a style to me. It’s a matter of substance.

All work is personal work.

I’ve done all types of ceremonies and worked with people from a variety of different backgrounds. The variety is one of the things I love most about my job.

Making people feel comfortable and seen is the foundation of my work. I am regularly making accommodations for people on wedding days and can provide solutions in the planning process as well as being flexible on the day of as things come up.

It can vary, but generally after the initial inquiry we schedule a meeting to see if we’ll be a good fit, the couple signs the contract electronically, submits payment for the retainer, and the date is booked : )

Typical would be around 9 months. Although it has ranged from one month to 2 years : )

In addition to making honest images I love it when people to tell me I made them feel comfortable on their wedding day. It’s not uncommon, but I’m thinking of one bride that began to feel overwhelmed on her wedding day. I let her know we had plenty of time and she could take all the time she needed to feel present again. I reassured her she wasn’t the only one to ever feel that way, and I stepped out of the bridal prep room and came back in when she was ready. Because I don’t have certain images that need to be taken you’ll never have me applying pressure on your wedding day.

My prices start at $5,000 for 6 hours. Each additional hour is $600. Travel might be additional depending on how far from Boston the event is.

I’ve been a wedding photographer for 20 years so my pricing reflects my experience and the unique approach I take. You won’t find many wedding photographers with actual photojournalism experience.

People call me a “ninja” because they don’t have many memories of me one their wedding day despite several hundred images from so many different moments of the day. I’m definitely a participant on your wedding day that you will interact with, but I love how I’m not the dominant memory. This is all by design : )

It’s not possible for every wedding to keep things simple, but each additional location adds a little more stress. Not everyone can have getting ready, ceremony, and reception all in one spot, but you might want to think about whether it’s worth driving to another location for portraits if there are some good options near the ceremony or the reception. Moving groups of people always requires more time than you would think : )

They usually have a complicated relationship with being photographed and being the center-of-attention. They want to celebrate with their friends and family, but they don’t want things to feel like a production.

I’ve done Indian weddings, Chinese Weddings, Jewish weddings, Christian weddings, Quaker Weddings and secular weddings.

“We believe you are a certified wizard”.

Laid back.

Love from Offbeat Couples

Two people sharing a joyful moment on an elegant staircase landing, one wearing an off-the-shoulder white gown holding a lush bouquet of blush roses and deep purple blooms, the other in a dark suit with gold tie and military ribbons, photographed by Channing Johnson Photography in the Northeast United States

Part of the reason we picked Channing was because we really liked his portfolio and his ability to capture moments that show the feeling of the day. He delivered some really great posed portraits, but my favorites were the more candid shots, or the moments he got photos in between the more posed images.

My husband and I are not two people who feel particularly comfortable in front of the camera, and the whole experience was great. Channing made everything feel very normal and not forced. Definitely recommend!

– Catherine S.

Channing was a true pleasure to work with, and came highly recommended from our wedding planner. We knew we didn’t want a lot of the poses and staged pictures, we were in search of someone that would focus on the day exactly as it was, without having to “stop and smile” for a picture.

Channing was able to capture the big and small moments and the emotion that came along with them.

At the same time he also seamlessly coordinated some traditional portraits that only took a few minutes. All of our guests and family members commented how calm and quiet he was. He even captured moments we didn’t even realize had happened!

Many times we said to ourselves “we didn’t know Channing was there!” or “how did he get that one?!” when looking through our photos. He did all of this while blending in easily to our day.

We had a small, intimate wedding and looking through our gallery was like rewatching our wedding day through the eyes of our guests, simply amazing. We are beyond thrilled with his work and our beautiful wedding photos that we will cherish forever. Not to mention, he got our entire gallery back to us within a month of the wedding!

“We just wanted to take a moment to thank you. Back when we saw your portfolio of work (thanks to Gabrielle!) all those months ago, we were so drawn to your work and the beautiful, genuine moments you captured. When we spoke with you by phone, we both felt immediately comfortable with you and your style – something that really matters to somewhat camera shy people. During our wedding weekend, you were such a warm, calm presence, especially as I got ready and hit a few moments of feeling overwhelmed. You made it all feel natural and easy. And the results!!! Oh my goodness – Channing, the photos are just so beautiful. We can’t stop looking, and our parents and loved ones are likewise in awe. I was worried that I didn’t pause enough during the day to take it all in, and as soon as I saw the photos I realized that was ok. It has been so special to relive the weekend through your work. I am truly so very thankful to you. Being great at what you do – in so many dimensions of it – doesn’t seem like a common or easy to achieve thing, and I hope you really do feel in touch with that truth, because we are just so bowled over by you and your talent!”

How did you get started as a wedding pro?

I love documentary photography and although I’ve worked for newspapers and magazines, I realized weddings are 95% documentary work. As I started doing more of them, I also loved how much people were appreciative of the work.

What was the moment you realized you didn't fit into the traditional wedding industry?

Immediately. I looked around and couldn’t find many others with the courage to let people just be themselves in wedding photos. Even as the word “documentary” became a buzz word in wedding marketing, it was still surprising to see that most photographers are still just posting the images they are in control of, like portraits and details. It can be scary to operate on a wedding day without a script. I feel very comfortable with it, because I see the rewards of that approach at every wedding.

Describe your aesthetic in three words that have nothing to do with weddings.

Honest, Quiet, Empathetic

What's one thing conventional wedding photographers often get wrong, and how do you do it differently?

They think that you have to control everything. But if you hold things too tightly they break. It’s better to let things unfold as they would organically without interference. That’s where the good stuff is.

What's your favorite wedding tradition and why?

They’re really hard to do well, but a good, well-written toast is incredible to witness.

What wedding tradition or trend do you wish would die and never come back?

Um. I don’t need it to die, but I’m seeing fewer formally designated bridesmaids and groomsmen. You can still honor your friends and spend quality time with them the morning of your wedding day without making them wear matching clothes. I like how a lot of my clients are asking “why” before deciding to move forward with a tradition. Some make sense, some don’t.

Have you planned your own wedding? How did it change how you work?

I got married a long time ago, and I’m a parent. Both those things have definitely influenced the way I cover a wedding. I’m much more intentional about getting as many guests as possible and making sure the important relationships are thoroughly documented.

What's the weirdest or most nontraditional wedding element you've seen?

I photographed a circus-themed wedding before. That was wild. https://www.channingjohnson.com/blog/2018/09/westport-ct-wedding

What do you wish couples knew about you before they reached out?

I edit my portfolio pretty specifically to attract the people I enjoy working with. If you’re reaching out to me and you like the unconventional images I put in my portfolio then there’s a great chance we’ll be a great fit : )
