About Maya Lovro Photography

Wedding Photography That Rewrites the Rules

Hello! I’m Maya (they/them) and I’m a wedding and elopement photographer based in New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and nationwide. I specialize in LGBTQ+, blended culture, and non-traditional celebrations of all shapes and sizes.

I am the ‘picnic elopement in the woods’ or ‘weekend campsite celebration’ or ‘screw it, let’s get married at a Waffle House’ photographer.

I don’t vibe with the idea that weddings need to look or feel a certain way. I take photos that showcase the life you’ve created together, no matter what that looks like or how you celebrate it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Being queer and nonbinary myself – I understand the lack of inclusivity in the wedding industry. I’m committed to making wedding day dreams come true for you and your love (or loves!) no matter your sexuality or gender identity. With me, you’ll never have to worry about crossing off a gendered label or answering uncomfortable questions. My entire photography process was designed to create a comfortable and safe environment for you and for all.

I work with nearlyweds who are often overlooked in the wedding industry: LGBTQ+ partners, multicultural and interfaith partners, neurodivergent partners, and anyone building a wedding around who they are. Those who choose me as their photographer tend to be nerdy, artistic, and, of course, looooove bold colors.

I am based in NYC and serving LGBTQ+, multicultural, interfaith, neurodivergent, and non-traditional couples nationwide.

My whole process is built around comfort and accessibility. I plan timelines with lots of breaks, keep poses adaptable for different bodies and mobility needs, keep family and guests busy when you need a break, and remind everyone to drink water one billion times through the day.

I check in several times throughout your planning about sensory needs, communication preferences, and anything else that helps you and your family + friends feel their best. I’m neurodivergent and disabled myself, so I truly get it. Weddings are a LOT both mentally and physically, but they don’t have to be with the right support.

It starts with an inquiry through my website. From there, I’ll send you a link to schedule a virtual call or in person meeting if you’re in NYC! We’ll talk about what you’re planning, what you care about most, and whether we’re a good fit. After the call, I’ll put together a custom proposal based on your coverage needs. Once you sign your contract and pay your retainer, your date is officially locked in.

The industry standard is 1 to 2 years out, but I work with nearlyweds at every stage of planning, so my bookings come in anywhere from 2 years to 2 months before the celebration. One warning: if you’re having a fall wedding, especially September or October, reach out earlier than you think you need to. Those dates go first every year.

Every wedding gets a custom quote based on the coverage you need. Most full-day (6-12 hours) wedding quotes come in between $6,200 and $12,000, with an average around $8,500. Cost depends primarily on length of coverage but is also influenced by add-ons like an engagement session, physical album, multi-day coverage, and travel.

I don’t offer just fixed packages because my couples’ weddings come in every possible shape and size. A two-day celebration with a tea ceremony, ketubah signing, and 300 person reception needs very different coverage than a courthouse elopement with a small brunch after. Custom proposals let me offer the coverage each wedding needs instead of trying to fit every celebration into a few boxes.

I also don’t require anyone to be locked into the package I send at booking. If your guest count doubles and you want to add on reception coverage, I got you. If you get fed up with the planning process and decide to just elope in the woods, I will still be there. Any time before or during our final timeline call, I can provide a new quote for longer or shorter coverage needs.

I keep a little list of phrases from past reviews on a whiteboard next to my desk to help me stay motivated. I’ll share a few of my favorites with you:

About comfort:
“I forgot there was a camera”
“I didn’t have to explain a single thing”
“nothing felt posed”
“we felt comfortable, seen, and celebrated”
“Maya has a wonderfully grounding presence”

About my work:
“our photos are dripping in colorful love and laughter”
“captures how magical we felt”
“hands down perfection”
“quality and colors were completely beyond expectations”
“an artist from start to finish”

About me:
“set such a high standard for inclusivity”
“instantly knew that they GET IT”
“the best hype people you could ask for”
“a total joy to work with”
“an absolute blast”

Hire vendors you don’t have to educate. If you spend your consultation explaining that there are two grooms, that your family’s traditions matter, or why you’re skipping the bouquet toss, you’re going to be exhausted and unconsciously wary of their ability to serve you well through the entire process.

Also, this is more of a personal opinion but get ready together in the morning. Don’t do a first look, don’t hide until the ceremony. Just see each other all morning, have breakfast together, hang out with friends and family. It takes so much stress off of everyone.

I’ve photographed Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Irish, Jewish, Christian, Pagan, interfaith, and so many more types of weddings including celebrations that blend multiple traditions across one or several days. I do my homework before every wedding and prep my team thoroughly so every event is treated with the respect and accurate coverage it deserves.

Someone once told me they were nervous while waiting for their photos because the whole experience felt too chill. Everything was so casual and lowkey that they were convinced the pictures would suck. Then the gallery arrived and they were amazed. Apparently I made them so comfortable they forgot professional photography was happening, which did give me heart palpitations in the moment but in hindsight might be the best review I’ve ever gotten.

Yes and so is my everything else. You will not run into gendered language anywhere in my paperwork.

Love from Offbeat Couples

Maya is truly a gem and we are so happy that they were our wedding photographer! They are kind, thoughtful, and professional through and through. It was so fun and wonderful to work with Maya, as well as Michael and Phil who were their assistant photographers that day.
When taking photos, Maya is calm and confident. The photos from our wedding are just stunning. In Maya’s portfolio, there are so many photos of couples that look like they’re in their own world, like there isn’t a camera at all. Having experienced being the subject, I definitely felt the magic. Maya understood us so well, gave us the perfect brief prompts, then quietly snapped away. I was worried I’d look awkward in photos from overthinking my poses as I normally would, but Maya is so skilled at capturing your best in the most natural way.

I was really nervous when I first started searching for photographers. I’m a queer trans man and my husband and I were going to have a fun, gay, non-traditional wedding surrounded by our lovely friends who are all across the gender spectrum. It was my number one priority to find a photographer who I’d feel completely at ease with. I’ve had the displeasure of just grimacing my way through uncomfortable photoshoots and enduring weird posing suggestions. I wanted to avoid that as much as possible on our wedding day! So when I found Maya’s portfolio, I was so excited. I instantly knew that they GET IT. I’m so glad Maya makes it loud and clear on their website what they’re about, because it made me reach out to them without hesitation. They ABSOLUTELY get it. A photographer was going to be the vendor we’d be talking to the most throughout the day, so this mattered to us so, so much. Not only so that we’d be comfortable, but our entire wedding party, too. I didn’t have to explain a single thing, and that was a huge relief.

ALSO, we (the couple, and also all of our friends) love anime, and it was honestly a huge bonus that Maya and Michael also liked some of the same stuff we do, because it made the photo-taking that much more fun as we laughed and made references. Couldn’t have asked for a cooler photographer team!!!

Final shoutout to Maya’s emails. They send very timely, thorough, and informative emails that helped us feel super prepared.

Maya was beyond what we hoped for in a wedding photographer. We are a mixed race couple, so having a photographer that could capture different skin tones was the most important thing for us, and Maya was amazing.

We also used bold fall colors, and Maya’s photography captured that beautifully. They were always quick to respond to questions and made the whole planning process very simple.

Maya and their second shooter were so much fun to work with while still clearly professional and in charge; we were laughing with them all day but still ran right on schedule! They were also great and very patient with older family members. They got us preview images very quickly that were STUNNING. We will always recommend them for any professional photography needs!

I could not have asked for a better photographer in any respect. Maya is extremely communicative, warm, welcoming, and damn good at what they do. I was incredibly nervous selecting a photographer because I had no idea what I was doing. During my first meeting with Maya, they put me completely at ease and walked me through the process, their photography philosophy, figured out what my spouse and I would/wouldn’t like in our photos, and even helped us get a sense of how our day’s timeline would go. Since we planned the entire wedding ourselves, their help even from this first meeting was invaluable.

Maya and their partner the day-of were an absolute blast to have at the event. Even the usual stiff family formal photos felt fun and organic with their guidance, and they were always up for impromptu shots and suggestions. They make sure that their work is organic, dynamic, and really captures the essence of the couple’s relationship. I asked them to use my Polaroid alongside their professional gear and they were really enthusiastic about the prospect, so now I have a set of killer Polaroids in addition to their amazing high definition work.

My spouse and I will absolutely be going back to Maya in the future for more photography. Some advice: Don’t waste your time shopping around with other photographers. If you’ve found Maya, you’ve found the perfect wedding photographer.

How do you personally identify, and how does that shape how you work with couples?

I’m queer, nonbinary, neurodivergent, and chronically ill. Life’s been a weird ride but I’m happy that I can use my own experiences to understand the needs of others like me and offer them the level of service they deserve but rarely get in the wedding industry.

How did you get started as a wedding pro?

I’d always been a photographer, but planning my own wedding showed me how few truly inclusive vendors were out there. I wanted to become the vendor I couldn’t find for myself.

What was the moment you realized you didn't fit into the traditional wedding industry?

During the pandemic, I photographed a lot of weddings for other photographers while my own clients rescheduled until things were safer. I, very quickly, saw what the larger wedding industry was really like and I knew I’d have to carve my own path.

Describe the aesthetic of your photos in three words:

colorful, comfy, gay

What's one thing conventional wedding vendors often get wrong, and how do you do it differently?

I think a lot of vendors, photographers especially, get stuck on a template. They’ve done so many weddings that look and flow one way that they project that expectation onto every wedding, even when it doesn’t fit. I’ve seen so many threads with photographers asking things like “Help, I’m photographing my first gay wedding, how do I pose them??” and that always confused me. Any couple (gay, straight, more than two people, whatever) gets posed the same way, I get to know them and work off their energy. Some couples are reserved and want quiet, romantic poses. Some are energetic and want to chase each other around and climb trees. Some couples have height differences, mobility differences, or attire that moves differently. If your only reference point is the same thin, straight, white, Christian church ceremony on repeat, you won’t know how to serve a couple outside that archetype. I’d love to see a wedding industry where vendors expanded their view of what weddings can be and who they include.

What's your favorite wedding tradition and why?

I really really love specific cultural or geographic wedding traditions. Moments like dividing korovai, the horah, Mehndi, gifting hongbao, handfasting, dollar dances, paper cranes, cookie tables, jumping the broom, and infinite more traditions unique to places or even families all honor time and history in a way that feels so personal and meaningful. Plus, they tend to make for great photos.

What wedding tradition or trend do you wish would die and never come back?

Garter toss. Next question.

What's the weirdest or most nontraditional wedding element you've seen?

I don’t consider any wedding elements weird. Humanity literally made all this up, no one thing is weirder than another.?? That being said, I’ve seen many interesting and unique wedding elements that I’ve loved. A few that come to mind at this moment are: – Providing every guest with a slice of toast so the meal could open with throwing them in the air like at a Rocky Horror shadowcast. – Officiant in a fursuit. – Cardboard cut outs of Viktor and Yuri from Yuri on Ice around the reception welcome signage. They eventually made it to the dance floor when History Maker came on. – Drag shows are not that uncommon but are always a great time. – A full wedding party dressed in j-fashion coordinates.

What do you wish couples knew about you before they reached out?

Whatever dorky thing they’re into, I either am, was, or will be into it too. Sometimes for the first few minutes of a meeting couples will be really shy and I have to find the right words to get them to let their guard down and not be afraid to tell me their wedding is Gundam themed or something.
